Justice nears for Dimpho Monareng: Plea bargain to decide Mosoma’s fate
A plea bargain will determine Katlego Mosoma’s sentence after pleading guilty to killing Dimpho Monareng (15) in a fatal Seshego drag race.
POLOKWANE – A plea bargain meeting, scheduled for an indefinite date, will determine the type of sentence that Katlego Mosoma (20), who is accused of culpable homicide, will receive.
This follows his recent admission of guilt in the Polokwane Regional Court for the killing of Dimpho Monareng (15) during a drag race in Seshego Zone 4 near Beach Front in December 2023.
The meeting, set under Section 105a of the Criminal Procedure Act, may allow Mosoma to avoid a full trial.
A senior public prosecutor is expected to attend this meeting to assist in the proceedings.
Mosoma’s next official court appearance is scheduled for May 7, where a decision on the case’s next steps will be made, potentially leading to his sentencing.
In the meantime, the family of Dimpho Monareng has received support from the Lentswe Laka Foundation.
Director Bridget Ramokone shared with BONUS that the foundation has organised psychological support to help the family cope with their grief during this difficult time.
The case has faced delays due to missing evidence, including sketches, photographs, and witness statements from the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), which were unavailable in June.
These delays were attributed to an officer on leave, who was responsible for releasing the evidence.
On several occasions, the absence of evidence caused further postponements, and Mosoma’s defence team at one point requested the case be withdrawn if the missing evidence was not presented.
Additionally, important witness statements, including one from a person who intervened at the scene by taking Mosoma’s car keys, were also absent from the case docket.
Despite these setbacks, all necessary evidence has now been submitted, allowing the case to be transferred to the regional court.
The upcoming plea hearing will bring the family closer to seeking justice for their loss.
