Man shot dead during evictions in Juju Valley

The details surrounding the death of a man who was shot and killed during an eviction operation by the Polokwane Municipality earlier today will form part of an investigation.

POLOKWANE – A man was shot and killed during the eviction of residents occupying private land near Matlala Road, known as the new Juju Valley.

The deceased was among those affected by the Polokwane Municipality’s eviction operation, which took place earlier today.

Police were present at the scene, but details surrounding the victim’s death will form part of an official investigation.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed that the municipality had obtained a court order prior to remove illegal occupants from the land.

Despite issuing eviction notices on three occasions, the notices were repeatedly destroyed, he said.

“Heavy machinery was deployed to demolish structures this morning. Unfortunately, a life was lost during the operation, and we deeply regret this incident. However, we refer all enquiries regarding the circumstances of the death to the police,” Selala said.

According to some occupiers, members of the EFF in Limpopo apparently assisted in the erection of the informal settlement.

This, however, could not be confirmed.

Residents expressed outrage over the eviction, accusing the municipality of failing to provide adequate land for settlement.

Selala reiterated the municipality’s stance on land allocation, emphasising that occupation must follow legal procedures.

“We acknowledge the increasing demand for land as Polokwane expands. However, land occupation can only happen in accordance with legal processes. We are working towards sustainable solutions aligned with urban planning regulations,” he stated.

The eviction operation was halted after residents obtained a court interdict.

Polokwane Observer is awaiting official comment from the police on the matter.
