A security guard was arrested in connection with the murder of a 63-year-old man when an eviction operation turned deadly in Seshego this week.

POLOKWANE – A tense eviction operation on private land between the Matlala Road and Zone 2 in Seshego turned tragic on Tuesday when a 63-year-old man was shot and killed.

The eviction, reportedly carried out by a security company contracted by the Polokwane Municipality, resulted in violent clashes between law enforcement and illegal squatters.

According to police reports, violence erupted when squatters began pelting security officers with stones, causing damage to a TLB. In response, a security officer fired a shot, fatally wounding the elderly man on the scene.

His death sent shockwaves through the crowd, with many condemning the municipality’s actions, viewing them as an attack on vulnerable citizens.

Polokwane Municipality issues several eviction notices prior the eviction that turns violent.

The Polokwane Municipality, however, defended its stance, stating that multiple eviction notices had been issued before taking action.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala explained that, as the land is privately owned, its illegal occupation would create service delivery challenges that do not align with the city’s spatial development and financial plans.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Brig Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the arrest of the security officer on a charge of murder.

He is expected to appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court soon. Additionally, a court order has been issued to halt further evictions.

Residents Polokwane Observer spoke to claimed they were encouraged by EFF members to occupy the land in January and immediately erect structures.

EFF provincial chairperson Lawrence Mapoulo blamed Polokwane Mayor John Mpe for the violent evictions, accusing him of using political power to oppress the poor.

A court order calls for Polokwane Municipality to stop with evictions effective immediately on Tuesday afternoon.

“Instead of providing services, he resorts to persecuting and killing defenceless citizens.

He does so with impunity, knowing nothing will happen to him,” Mapoulo claimed.

The mayor could not be reached at the time of going to print.
