Limpopo’s new liquor regulations: Key changes explained
Limpopo's new liquor regulations introduce updated operating hours, licensing processes, and business modifications, aiming to boost the industry and economy.

POLOKWANE – After much deliberation and court processes, the official Limpopo Liquor Regulations have been announced and published by Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism.
In addition to the new and updated regulations, there is a new application type for liquor licence holders seeking extension of the building period or amendment of building plans, modification of regulations related to changing core business or extending business and appointment of a manager for licensed premises.

Before the recent changes, establishments selling liquor for on-site consumption (where liquor is consumed on the premises) could operate until 02:00.
Liquor stores that sell liquor for off-consumption (where liquor is taken away from the premises) were previously allowed to sell on Sundays, but this was also changed to midnight.
The Limpopo Liquor Amendments Regulations 2025, issued under section 69 of the Liquor Act 05 of 2009 hereby allows for closing hours as follows:
Micro-manufacturers: 24 hours, seven days a week.
Entertainment business areas including a theatre, cinema, dance hall, sports centre and casino: 10:00-04:00.
Areas zoned as residential: 10:00-02:00.
On-Site consumption with the provision of food: 10:00-02:00.
Special events permit (business areas): 10:00-04:00.
Areas zoned as residential: 10:00-02:00.

Departmental spokesperson Zaid Kalla said they hoped the change would improve the economy of the liquor trading industry and please stakeholders.
