Rape case against Mankweng teacher postponed again

The Mankweng teacher accused of raping a 13-year-old learner remains in custody as the case is postponed for further court arguments.

POLOKWANE – The case against a primary school teacher from Mankweng who has been charged with the rape of a 13-year-old Gr 7 learner, has been postponed again.

The 58-year-old teacher, who cannot be named to protect the identity of victim, appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday for the third time.

According to the presiding officer, Magistrate Venus Makhubela, the matter was adjourned to Thursday for arguments by both the state and the defence.

The accused remained in custody.

During the cross-examination phase and argument of evidence by both the defence and the state, it was established that the teacher recently resigned.

He told the court, through his lawyer Adv Michael Khumalo, that he resigned to undergo an ancestral calling and in his short application for bail stated that his release would help him continue the process.

The accused was arrested in March after the incident that reportedly occurred on the school premises in Makotopong.

According to the state, the teacher had sexually abused the learner several times since July 2024.

He faces charges of rape and sexual grooming of a minor.
