2 Arrested in Polokwane after woman learns she’s married to a stranger

A woman discovered she was fraudulently registered as married, prompting an investigation and two arrests in Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – Two male foreign nationals, aged 39 and 57, have been arrested following a joint police and Home Affairs operation on July 9 at the Seshego Home Affairs office.

The Limpopo police spokesperson, Col Malesela Ledwaba said the arrests followed a complaint from a 59-year-old woman who discovered that she had been fraudulently registered as married to a foreign national without her knowledge or consent.

“The woman was informed of the illegal marriage when she visited the Department of Home Affairs for a personal inquiry. Records showed the unauthorised marriage was registered in Johannesburg on January 28, 2017,” his statement read.

The case was reported to Polokwane SAPS, and a joint investigation with Home Affairs officials led to the arrest of the 39-year-old suspect, a manager at a Nirvana-based industrial bakery, on July 10.

He has been charged with fraud.

“During the same operation, a second suspect was also arrested at the bakery for contravening the Immigration Act, after he failed to produce valid documentation,” Ledwaba said.

Both suspects are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (July 14).
