Gauteng officer arrested for attempted murder and arson in Mokopane

A 46-year-old police sergeant from Gauteng is due in court after a domestic incident in Bakenberg left a woman injured.

MOKOPANE – A police sergeant (46) stationed at the Olievenhoutbosch SAPS in Gauteng has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his girlfriend and setting her home alight during a domestic incident in Lyden village, Bakenberg, early on Thursday, July 10.

The Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said the man arrived at the woman’s residence around 02:45 and became enraged when she didn’t respond to his knock.

“The suspect is alleged to have set fire to the curtains, which caused the entire two-roomed tin structure to burn down. The woman sustained injuries and was rescued by neighbours, who alerted emergency services,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said the suspect, who is believed to be the victim’s boyfriend, was traced and arrested the following day.

“The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been informed and is handling the case further,” he confirmed.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised officers for their swift response.

The accused is expected to appear before the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (July 14), facing charges of attempted murder and arson.
