The Limpopo Department of Transport says the R81 is now open to motorists.

Heavy congestion was reported in the area earlier as Ga-Sekgopo blocked the road with rocks, tree branches and other items in protest over a lack of water supply.

Acting transport spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala said they acknowledge the inconvenience cause and appreciate the swift action taken by the SAPS in dispersing the crowd.

“We encourage motorists to exercise caution while traveling on the road and to follow traffic rules for a safe journey,” his statement concluded.

POLOKWANE – Motorists travelling to and from Polokwane via the R81 are advised to use alternative routes as the road is closed due to a community protest in the Ga-Sekgopo area.

Reports suggest residents in the area are protesting over ongoing water shortages and have blocked the R81 with rocks, tree branches and other items.

In videos shared on social media, residents of the area can be heard asking government for intervention, stating that they have not had water supply for over three months.

– Join R36 to Mooketsi

For Polokwane-bound traffic:
