Polokwane Municipality condemns reckless drifting stunt in Fauna Park

The Polokwane Municipality condemned a driver caught drifting in a Fauna Park park, calling the stunt a violation of road and safety laws.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality has condemned the actions of a driver who was caught on video drifting a courier van through a municipal park in Fauna Park on July 10.

The video shows the unmarked van speeding and skidding in circles, kicking up dust while a group of people watched and cheered from under a nearby tree.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed the incident is a clear violation of both municipal protocols and the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

“The Road Traffic Act strictly prohibits the dragging or racing of vehicles in public areas. Activities like this are only permitted within designated and approved venues, like the Polokwane Showgrounds, and must take place in a controlled, safe, and lawfully organised environment,” Selala said.

He added that in accordance with municipal protocols, any event like this must be formally planned, with the involvement and approval of the municipality.

“This will include the appointment of a recognised event organiser and adherence to safety and compliance standards. The activity depicted in the video is a clear violation of these regulations and poses serious risks to public safety. We strongly condemn such actions and urge all residents to refrain from engaging in or supporting unlawful road behaviour,” he said.

A local resident, at the time, said attempts to report the incident to the police and the community policing forum reportedly received a “luke warm” response.

The resident said the driver eventually exited the park and sped up and down the street “like a maniac” before leaving the area.

“I’ve never seen anything like that. There are places for this kind of behaviour, but not in a public park. It’s a delivery vehicle, it’s not built for this.”
