More than 25 000 Limpopo initiates return home as season ends

A mix of cultural pride and safety concerns marked the end of Limpopo’s 2025 initiation season involving over 600 schools across the province.

POLOKWANE – The winter initiation season officially concluded on Saturday, with villages across the province erupting in celebratory ceremonies as more than 25 000 initiates returned home.

The season followed Provincial Government’s approval of over 600 initiation schools.

Traditional leaders have welcomed the largely successful season, with MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu, commending the work of experienced traditional surgeons.

He acknowledged the somber moments, however, confirming two fatalities: one due to illness and another following a fire incident at a school in Tzaneen.

“Even one death is too many. Our hearts go out to the families,” said Makamu, urging better preparation and support for future seasons.

Not all stories were, however, celebratory.

Limpopo police recently arrested four persons for abducting 72-year-old Matlankane Mathobela and forcing him into an initiation school in Ga-Mamatsha Village, where he was reportedly assaulted and circumcised without consent.

He was rescued the following day by traditional affairs authorities.

The Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba called on all future initiation school operators to ensure early registration and full compliance with the law.

“Proper registration allows health and cultural authorities to offer oversight and support, ensuring the safety of our children and elders,” she said.
