Rethabile Gardens residents tackle litter problem
Residents of Rethabile Gardens and nearby areas took part in a clean-up drive to tackle illegal dumping and raise awareness about responsible waste habits.
POLOKWANE – Residents of Rethabile Gardens joined forces on Saturday in a community clean-up campaign aimed at tackling the growing problem of littering in the area.
The initiative forms part of an agreement made earlier this year to conduct a clean-up campaign every six months. According to ward councillor Khathu Mathoho, the campaign is also about changing attitudes around littering.
“The municipality collects refuse every week, yet we are still creating illegal dumping sites. And it’s mostly the adults who litter, then blame the municipality. That’s why the awareness part of this campaign is so important,” he said.
While the clean-up was focused on Rethabile Gardens, nearby communities were also invited to participate, including residents from Emdo Park, Mahlasedi Park, Mahlako-a-Phaahla Gardens and Lithuli Park.
Mathoho said he was disappointed in the turnout from Rethabile Gardens residents.
“This campaign is for their own benefit, and I had hoped for more participation. Still, I’m grateful for those who did show up.” He added that there are now plans to increase the frequency of the campaign to once every three months.
The councillor thanked all volunteers who took part, applauding their enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment to keeping the neighbourhood clean.
