VIDEO: Hailstorm leads to 2 collisions on N1 outside Mokopane

A hailstorm on the N1 between Polokwane and Mokopane has led to two vehicle collisions as a Level 3 storm watch is in effect.

POLOKWANE – A hailstorm on the N1 between Polokwane and Mokopane has led to two reported incidents, reports the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety.

A powerful cut-off low system is expected to bring wet and cold conditions to parts of the province today, with both Polokwane and Mokopane under a Level 3 severe thunderstorm watch.

Transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said the two collisions occurred in different sections of the N1 South.

They were reported as follows:

Collision 1: Ysterberg
– Three vehicles, a petrol tanker, a light delivery vehicle and a luxury sedan, were involved in a side swipe incident.
– No injuries were reported but one lane remains closed.

Collision 2: Caltex next to The Ranch Resort
– A heavy motor vehicle and a light delivery vehicle were involved in a head-on collision.
– Two people were transported to hospital for medical treatment as a result.

Chuene said motorists are advised to drive with caution due to slippery conditions.

“Traffic officers are monitoring the situation on the N1 and all emergency services stakeholders are on standby. It’s recommended that motorists exercise extra caution when driving in these conditions by reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance, and activating headlights for improved visibility,” she said.
