Gerhard Franken wins top tourism industry award
Gerhard Franken earns national tourism award for his dedication to hospitality, community upliftment, and skills development in Limpopo.
POLOKWANE – Local resident Gerhard Franken has been recognised for his contributions to the tourism and hospitality industry, receiving the Business Tourism Community of the Year award at the prestigious Africa Tourism Indaba.
Franken, one of 14 national nominees, was honoured for his commitment to uplifting industry peers and promoting excellence.
With over 25 years’ experience in hospitality, both locally and internationally, his career includes a decade in London, where he managed hotels, earned qualifications in marketing and business administration, and contributed to the planning of the 2012 Olympic Games.
Since returning to South Africa, Franken has managed several four- and five-star properties and played key roles in industry organisations.
He currently chairs the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI) in Limpopo and was recently elected to the national board. He also served as chairperson for both the Polokwane and Limpopo Tourism Associations and was part of Ledet’s provincial tourism forum.
“I am passionate about every aspect of hospitality and believe in the development and growth of this province and country,” he said.
Franken’s company, Naledi Hospitality and Consultants, focuses on rural development, community empowerment, and skills training.
His passion lies in storytelling and people development. “Everyone has a story, from a hotel cleaner to a CEO. I thrive on helping young people grow from learning basic skills to earning international qualifications.”
He also supports the sector through networking, student mentorships, fundraising for charities and facilitating training workshops.
His continued involvement in national events such as the SAACI Conference ensures he remains at the forefront of trends in MICE and tourism.
“We’re constantly working to help communities with issues like compliance, grading, funding, and service excellence,” he added.
