Planned march against municipal officials to go ahead in Polokwane

The Concerned Citizens of Polokwane will march tomorrow to open a criminal case against the mayor and municipal manager on corruption allegations.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality has approved a peaceful service delivery march by the civic organisation, Concerned Citizens of Polokwane (CCP), which will take place tomorrow (August 13).

The protest will gather at SABC Park and run from 07:00 to 17:00.

The document, signed in the office of Municipal Manager Thuso Nemugumoni, declared that the demonstration would be peaceful and unarmed within the specified times.

The march’s convener and coordinator are local politicians Thapelo Molepo (a former political ally of Mayor John Mpe) and Phasoane Mphahlele.

In a recent statement, the CCP invited residents from all 45 wards of the Polokwane Municipality, including business-people and politicians to join the march, stating that no regard is given to affiliations as the formation relates to concerns over service delivery.

According to the leaders of the new organisation, their intention is to hold public officials accountable and ensure the correct provision of services to the people.

In a written email to the Polokwane Observer, the CCP stated that the reasons for the march are “supplemented by the reality of immeasurable unemployment in our municipality and the lack of public service provision”.

The group intends to submit memorandums of demand to the Office of the Premier of Limpopo, the National Prosecuting Authority in Limpopo, and the Polokwane Municipality.

The central demand is the immediate resignation of both Mpe and Nemugumoni.

They are also set to open a criminal case against the two at the Polokwane police station.

In recent weeks, Molepo and Mphahlele have been vocal about the removal of Mpe and Nemugumoni, citing corruption allegations.

Mpe has dismissed these as fabricated and politically motivated.
