197 cataract patients regain vision at Mankweng Hospital

The Mankweng Hospital restored sight to 197 patients during Nelson Mandela Eye Care Month, tackling Limpopo’s cataract surgery backlog

POLOKWANE – Mankweg Hospital successfully restored the sight of 197 cataract patients during the Nelson Mandela Eye Care Month, held from July 19 to August 10.

The campaign was launched by Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the province’s cataract surgery backlog. This initiative highlights the importance of accessible, quality healthcare for all citizens. By restoring vision to these patients, the hospital has greatly improved their quality of life, helping them regain independence and dignity.

“I am incredibly proud of the Mankweng Hospital team for their dedication and commitment to serving our people,” Mashego. The campaign’s success was made possible through the collaboration of hospital staff and healthcare professionals, aligning with the Rural Health Matters programme. The programme also aims to bring quality health services closer to communities, especially in rural areas.

Additional cataract surgeries and other procedures will be performed at Elim Hospital, improving access to care and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.

Mashego encouraged residents to use available eye health services and seek early medical help if they experience vision problems.

“Early intervention is key to preventing vision loss and improving outcomes. We urge everyone to prioritise their eye health and seek medical attention if they notice any changes in their vision,” she said.
