A 19-year-old foreign national has been arrested in Musina after a child (8) was raped, allegedly while in his care.

LIMPOPO – The police in Musina have arrested a 19-year-old foreign national in connection with the rape of a child (8).

The suspect has also been charged with contravening the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.

The Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, said the incident occurred at the victim’s residential place in Matswale Phase Two, Musina, on Sunday (August 17).

“The child was left in the care of her uncle, the suspect, while her mother went to visit an inmate at the Musina Police Station. The mother returned home at around 12:15, and the suspect left. In the evening, the victim began complaining of pain in her private parts. She then told her mother that her uncle had raped her and that it was not the first time. The suspect had allegedly told her not to tell anyone,” Mashaba’s statement read.

The victim’s mother confirmed the act of rape at a medical facility before reporting the case to Musina SAPS.

The police Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit immediately began an investigation, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Mashaba said the suspect will appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court today (August 19) on charges of rape and contravening the Immigration Act.
