Another Olifantspoot pipe burst causes water supply interruptions in Polokwane
Water supply to Polokwane and nearby municipalities has been disrupted after a major pipe burst near Sefalaolo.
POLOKWANE – Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) has confirmed another major disruption to Polokwane’s water supply following a pipe burst on the Specon pipeline near Sefalaolo early this morning, (October 4).
The pipe burst follows a planned shutdown earlier this week that left the city’s taps dry.
While an earlier statement suggested water supply would return to the city on Friday evening, some residents reported low pressure this morning.
According to the utility, the pipe burst occurred at around 08:00 and has resulted in a complete interruption of water supply to areas supplied through the Olifantspoort Scheme, including the Polokwane, Lepelle Nkumpi, and Fetakgomo Tubatse municipalities.
“LNW’s maintenance team has been dispatched to the site and emergency repair work is underway. Immediate steps taken include stopping Pump Station 1 (PS1), isolating the damaged section of the pipeline, and beginning the restoration process. The team anticipates completing the repair work by 17:00 today, after which water flow will gradually be restored across affected areas,” LNW’s spokesperson Joe Makhafola said.
He added that the teams are working tirelessly to ensure full restoration and that the pipe burst was an unforeseen incident.
