Mogalakwena pledges to fix all broken streetlights by end of October

Mogalakwena Municipality has pledged to repair all broken streetlights across town and township areas by the end of October, introduce CCTV and speed cameras, and enforce safety bylaws.

MOKOPANE – The DA has welcomed commitments from the Mogalakwena Municipality to repair all broken streetlights across town and surrounding township areas by the end of October.

The pledge came after DA ward councillors for ward 31 and 32, Monique Maartens and Yolande Coetzee, DA PR councillor Daily Matheba Mphaho and DA MP Beyers Smit conducted an oversight visit with Mayor Ngoako Taueatsoala, the electrical department manager, division heads, supervisors and technicians last week.

“I am pleased to announce that we got multiple commitments from the mayor as well as the officials of Mogalakwena Municipality that include that the municipality now has a capacity to attend to all streetlights and the resources will be focused to fix all broken streetlights by the end of October,” Smit said.

He added that the municipality will publish a weekly schedule outlining the systematic repair of lights street by street. Should unforeseen circumstances affect the plan, an updated programme of action will be communicated to residents.

Smit also confirmed that the addition of new streetlights in outlying areas, especially those bordering bushes and open fields, will be prioritised in the next IDP and budget cycle.

The municipality further pledged to urgently enforce bylaws on the upkeep and cleaning of vacant stands to improve safety for surrounding residents.

In addition, a memorandum of understanding will be signed between the municipality, the police, private security firms and community safety forums for the effective use of the new surveillance camera system.

“This will coordinate efforts to combat crime and ensure successful prosecution of criminals,” Smit said.

Taueatsoala said a comprehensive list of streets requiring urgent attention has already been developed.

“Our priority is to make Mogalakwena a safe and secure place for everyone. By fixing our streetlights, installing CCTV and introducing speed cameras, we are taking concrete steps to fight crime and curb reckless driving.”

He further urged residents to support the initiative. “Safety is not the municipality’s duty only, it is a shared responsibility.”
