Another deadly Limpopo crash claims six lives on R524 outside Thohoyandou

Six people were killed in a crash on the R524 near Thohoyandou in the early hours of Sunday morning, marking Limpopo’s third fatal road incident in a week.

LIMPOPO – Six people have died following a crash on the R524 road just outside Thohoyandou in the early hours of Sunday morning (October 19).

According to the Limpopo Department of Transport, preliminary reports indicate the vehicle lost control and veered off the road, scattering passengers across the scene.

Acting transport spokesperson Matome Tauetsoala said four passengers died instantly, while the driver and another person who sustained critical injuries were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they later succumbed.

One passenger remains in hospital.

“The exact cause of the crash will be confirmed once investigations are complete,” he said.

The Transport and Community Safety MEC, Violet Mathye, expressed her sadness over the tragedy, extending condolences to the affected families.

She added that as part of Transport Month, law enforcement officers will continue to be deployed across the province to monitor road safety and enforce compliance.

“Drivers are once again urged to be vigilant as they travel to different destinations,” she said.

This incident occurred days after a cross-border

Third fatal crash in one week

This tragedy marks the third major fatal road incident in Limpopo in just one week.

Last Sunday (October 12), 43 people were killed and several others injured when a cross-border bus travelling from the Eastern Cape to Zimbabwe plunged down an embankment on the N1 North near Louis Trichardt.

A preliminary investigation revealed that speeding and faulty brakes were the main causes of the incident.

In a separate incident on Wednesday (October 15), one person was killed in a multi-vehicle collision involving a minibus taxi, a hatchback, and a truck.

Call for vigilance

Mathye has urged motorists to be extra vigilant as Transport Month operations continue across Limpopo, with law enforcement officers deployed to monitor compliance.

“Drivers are once more urged to be vigilant as they continue with their journeys to different destinations,” she said.
