Limpopo’s Ozwikona Makuya wins top honours at Eskom Science Fair
Mbilwi Secondary’s Ozwikona Makuya wins a full Eskom bursary for his smart learning app “MacSonic” at the 2025 International Science Fair.
LIMPOPO – A Limpopo learner has been recognised among South Africa’s brightest young scientists after creating a digital learning app that could transform the way learners study.
Ozwikona Makuya, a Grade 12 learner at Mbilwi Secondary School in Thohoyandou, represented the Vhembe Region at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF), held at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park from October 6 to 10, 2025.
Makuya’s innovative project, titled “MacSonic”, earned him a full Eskom bursary to study in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) at a South African university of his choice.
Inspired by the daily challenges faced by learners who use mobile phones to study, Makuya developed MacSonic, a smart, all-in-one learning app that helps students stay organised and focused.
The app consolidates study materials, schedules, and progress trackers into one platform, reducing distractions and burnout.
Makuya says he wanted to “create something that makes studying easier for every learner, no matter where they are or what resources they have.”
Judges praised the project for addressing a real-world issue with practical, scalable solutions, a hallmark of innovation that aligns with South Africa’s growing focus on digital education.
The Eskom Expo International Science Fair brought together over 500 learners from across South Africa and from countries including Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ireland, India, and Russia.
Six full Eskom bursaries worth R5m were awarded during the Special Awards Ceremony to learners who displayed exceptional creativity and scientific thinking.
These bursaries cover full tuition, accommodation, meals, textbooks, and a living allowance.
Eskom Development Foundation Acting CEO Mologadi Motshele said the event shows the value of investing in the next generation of innovators:
“By supporting initiatives like the Eskom Expo, we are creating opportunities for learners to showcase their talents and drive South Africa’s innovation agenda.”
Makuya’s success highlights Limpopo’s growing presence in science and technology innovation, with Mbilwi Secondary School, already known for producing top achievers, once again on the national stage.
Provincial education officials have commended her achievement as an example of how rural learners can excel when given access to opportunities and mentorship in STEM fields.
