Lebowakgomo cop faces drunk driving charge after Westenburg crash
A Lebowakgomo police officer faces charges after allegedly driving drunk and injuring two pedestrians in Westenburg.
POLOKWANE – A 46-year-old police officer stationed at Lebowakgomo has been subpoenaed to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in April 2026, following a drunk driving incident that left two young pedestrians injured in Westenburg earlier this month.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, the officer was arrested on October 10 and charged with drunken driving and reckless and or negligent driving.
He was later released and issued a subpoena while DNA test results are pending as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred on Missouri Street, Westenburg, where the man reportedly lost control of his vehicle and it veered onto the sidewalk, striking an 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man.
The woman was transported to hospital by emergency services, while the man, according to eye witnesses, escaped with minor injuries.
Footage of the incident shows the man outside the vehicle shortly after the crash in a visibly intoxicated state.
According to eye witnesses, his SAPS identification card and ID fell from his pockets during the incident.
The father of the injured woman, Edwin Mokgalagadi, has accused the Westenburg Police Station of delays in dealing with the matter, and a lack of transparency.
“When I went to the station the next day, I was told the investigating officer was in Pretoria. I couldn’t confirm whether the suspect had been arrested or released, even though locals claimed to have seen him that same morning,” Mokgalagadi said.
He further alleges that, more than a week later, no one from the station had engaged either the victims or eyewitnesses to obtain statements.
Mokgalagadi says he intends to file a complaint of police misconduct with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and has called for external oversight into the case.
Ledwaba confirmed the arrest and the pending DNA process.
The officer’s name is withheld until he has appeared in court. The case remains under active investigation.
