The sweet sound of success: Meet Polokwane’s Mr Sweets

For over 15 years, Wonder “Mr Sweets” Mutongwizo has made a living selling sweets on the streets of Polokwane with faith and determination.

POLOKWANE – For more than 15 years, the clinking of sweets boxes on a motorbike has been the soundtrack to Wonder Mutongwizo’s working life.

Known as Mr Sweets, the Zimbabwean-born entrepreneur has transformed selling sweets on the streets of Polokwane into not just a job, but a source of pride and success.

Mutongwizo arrived in South Africa in 2008 and settled in Nelspruit, where he was introduced to the sweet trade.

“I started selling sweets while I was still working in Mpumalanga. On Mondays I sold in Lydenburg, Tuesdays in Polokwane, and Wednesdays in Tzaneen,” he recalled.

Wonder “Mr Sweets” Mutongwizo has been selling sweets on Polokwane’s streets for more than 15 years.

Over the years, his hard work allowed him to purchase another motorbike and a bakkie, expanding his reach and business.

“Since 2008 till date, I love my work and I enjoy doing it,” he said.

While challenges remain, Mr Sweets insists they do not define his story.

“In rainy weather the road is slippery sometimes, but my faith keeps me going,” he said.

Looking ahead, he dreams of growing his business further.

“I would like to expand my business if possible. Selling sweets has become bread and butter for me and my family,” he concluded.
