The Vhavenda nation mourns acting king Mavhungu David Mphephu, remembered as a humble and visionary leader dedicated to unity and development.
LIMPOPO – The acting Vhavenda king, Vho Mavhungu David Mphephu, has passed away after a long illness, marking a great loss to the Vhavenda nation. He died on October 22, and tributes have since poured in from across the region.
Family spokesperson Ntsieni Ramaulana described the late Mphephu as a humble and visionary leader dedicated to the development of his people.
“In Mphephu, we had a great leader who worked well with everyone. He listened to people, was eager to learn, and always judged matters fairly. He was hardworking, unified the royal family, and constantly encouraged togetherness,” Ramaulana said.
He added that under Mphephu’s leadership, the area saw notable progress and strengthened traditional governance.
“His death is a great shock to us. He has left a big void that will be very difficult to fill,” he said.
As per Venda royal tradition, the official burial will take place on Friday evening, October 31, at the sacred royal burial grounds, attended only by close family members.
A public funeral service will be held earlier that afternoon to allow the community to bid farewell to their beloved leader.
Makhado Mayor Dorcus Mboyi extended condolences to the royal family and the Vhavenda people.
“He was a rare leader who truly cared and was always there when needed,” said Mboyi.
A community member also described him as “a people’s leader whose kindness and humility touched many lives.”
