Newborn baby rescued after being found under a tree in Makotopong

The Sebayeng police are searching for a woman who abandoned her newborn baby under a tree in Makotopong on October 19.

POLOKWANE – The Sebayeng police have launched a search for a woman who allegedly gave birth to a baby girl and later abandoned her in Kgatla Section, Makotopong, near a brick yard on the morning of October 19.

According to police reports, a female passerby made the shocking discovery after noticing the newborn baby lying under a thorn tree along the roadside.

The infant had been wrapped in a black jersey and placed inside a plastic bag.

The Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said the passerby called for help from the community, police and emergency medical services.

“When officers arrived, they found the baby alive and crying, with no visible injuries. She was rushed to a local clinic for medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition,” his statement read.

Ledwaba confirmed that an abandonment case has been opened and are appealing to the public to assist in tracing the baby’s mother.

“Anyone with information that can assist in locating the mother is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Lucy Ngobeni from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit at 082 565 6764 or 082 729 0399,” he said.

Alternatively, information can be reported to the nearest police station, through the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or via the My SAPS App.
