Cash-in-transit robbery turns deadly in Thohoyandou
One suspect was killed and two people injured in a Thohoyandou cash-in-transit robbery, with the Limpopo Hawks launching a manhunt.
LIMPOPO- The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit in Musina has launched a manhunt for suspects involved in a cash-in-transit robbery that turned deadly in Thohoyandou yesterday (October 31).
According to preliminary reports, a security officer was attacked by three armed men while transporting cash from a shop to an armoured vehicle.
The robbers allegedly opened fire, shooting the officer before fleeing with a trolley bag containing cash.
According to the Limpopo Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, a shootout ensued, resulting in a crossfire that fatally wounded one suspect and injured two people, including a 14-year-old schoolgirl.
“The security officer and the injured individuals were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The deceased suspect has been identified as Muungulwa Dakalo (36) from Tshilungola village, who was out on parole at the time of the incident,” his statement read.
Mmuroa added that the police recovered the stolen cash, along with a firearm, cartridges, ammunition, a cellphone and a magazine.
“The remaining suspects reportedly escaped in a white Toyota Quantum without registration plates. A case of robbery with aggravating circumstances has been opened and investigations continue,” he said.
Police have appealed to the community at large to assist with information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the remaining suspects.
