SANBS hero marks 100 blood donations in Polokwane

Polokwane nurse and SANBS collections manager Bethuel Mokonyane celebrates his 100th blood donation, inspiring others to give the gift of life.

POLOKWANE – Bethuel Mokonyane, the collections manager at the Polokwane Donor Centre, recently reached his 100th blood donation milestone.

The 48-year-old is a dedicated nurse with 16 years of service at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).

He inspires others with his journey of giving blood with unwavering passion.

Mokonyane started donating in 2012, driven by his desire to assist people and provide care with a customer-centric heart.

“Serving others is not just a job. It’s a calling I embrace wholeheartedly,” he said.

He explained that he started donating during a period when SANBS faced a critical shortage of blood.

“Coupled with the powerful speeches I heard from recipients sharing how this life-saving gift gave them a second chance at life, it struck a chord. I knew I had to do something to help, and donating blood felt like the perfect way to make a tangible difference. Every donation feels like a gift to someone out there who needs it. The joy of giving keeps me going.”

Mokonyane added that reaching the milestone wasn’t planned; he simply couldn’t stop once he started.

“There’s an indescribable happiness in knowing I’ve helped someone in need. As long as my health permits, I will continue to donate because it’s a life-saving procedure. Pure and simple. By donating blood, I’m giving someone a second chance at life. It’s a selfless act that can make a monumental difference to someone in need. And that’s why I do it,” he said.
