Video evidence set to change direction of acid-attack case

The Mokopane Regional Court focused on untampered video footage in the attempted-murder case against Yvonne Maja, with survivor Mmapeu Hlanga set to testify again.

MOKOPANE – The trial of Yvonne Maja, who reportedly attacked Mmapeu Neo Hlanga with acid and assaulted her then-boyfriend Kgotlelelo Phasha, continued in the Mokopane Regional Court on Monday.

During the proceedings, the focus shifted to video footage from the day of the incident. The court heard testimony confirming that the footage presented as evidence had not been tampered with.

Bosveld previously reported that Hlanga survived the acid attack in October 2024.

Maja allegedly carried out the assault after accusing Hlanga of being romantically involved with her boyfriend.

The attack left Hlanga with severe burns to her face and body, requiring extensive plastic surgery.

Hlanga was first admitted to Zebediela Hospital before being transferred to Mankweng Tertiary Hospital for specialised treatment due to severe septic burns. She was admitted to the female surgical ward, where her long and complex medical recovery began.

Over a five-month period, Hlanga underwent several surgical procedures, including scalp debridement and skin grafts.

Her recovery remains ongoing, with further treatment and monitoring from her clinical team.

She continues to receive care for pressure garments, which are crucial for managing burn scars.

Additional surgical procedures will be considered once she is sufficiently healed.

When Maja appeared in court she was granted R3 000 bail, and the matter was transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that following investigations, she was charged with attempted murder, upgraded from the initial charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The video footage is expected to play a critical role in the case as Hlanga continues to confront her attacker in court.

The matter has been postponed to December 1, when Hlanga is expected to take the stand again to explain the content of the video.
