MEC Mashego vows support for Zebediela acid attack survivor

Limpopo Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego has pledged support for acid attack survivor Mampeu Hlanga, who continues her recovery after extensive surgery.

POLOKWANE – The MEC for Health, Dieketseng Mashego, has voiced her deep concern and pledged continued support for Mampeu Neo Hlanga (27) from Sekgweng village in Zebediela, who survived a brutal acid attack in October 2024.

The assault, reportedly carried out by a 25-year-old woman who accused Hlanga of being romantically involved with her boyfriend, left her with severe burns to her face and body, requiring extensive plastic surgery.

Hlanga was first admitted to Zebediela Hospital before being urgently referred to Mankweng Tertiary Hospital for specialised care due to septic burns.

She spent five months in the female surgical ward, undergoing multiple procedures including scalp debridement, skin grafts and ectroplan release.

Mampeu Neo Hlanga survived an acid attack.

She was discharged on April 18 after months of intensive treatment, but later referred back to Mankweng’s eye ward for further evaluation.

Her recovery remains ongoing, with continuous assessment for pressure garments to aid burn recovery and scar management.

Additional reconstructive procedures will be considered once her condition improves.

Mashego commended healthcare workers at both Zebediela and Mankweng hospitals for their dedication, while condemning gender-based violence in all its forms.

“We call on communities to stand united against acts of violence and to support survivors on their road to healing and justice,” she said.

The suspected attacker was arrested on February 14, appeared in court the following day, and was released on R3 000 bail.

The case has since been transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court

. The Department of Health reiterated its commitment to Hlanga’s ongoing recovery, ensuring access to reconstructive and rehabilitative services.
