UPDATE: ‘Reckless’ driver flees fatal N1 crash near Polokwane
Three children were among those killed on the N1 near Ysterberg after an illegal overtake led the driver responsible to flee the scene.
POLOKWANE – The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has condemned the “cowardly” driver responsible for a fatal chain-reaction collision on the N1 near Ysterberg.
The crash occurred when an unknown vehicle, overtaking illegally on a barrier line, forced an SUV to swerve. The SUV collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota sedan, after which a VW sedan also crashed into the Toyota.

The driver of the Toyota, a woman, and three children in the vehicle were killed. The driver of the VW Sedan sustained critical injuries, while the driver of the SUV received minor injuries.
The driver of the unknown vehicle that caused the crash fled the scene.

“We are appalled by this senseless tragedy and condemn the reckless behaviour of the fleeing driver. We call on the police to leave no stone unturned in tracking down this cowardly individual,” MEC Mathye said in a statement.
The department extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
