24 Scholar transport vehicles impounded in Polokwane
Limpopo's Transport Department impounded 24 minibuses and cars for non-compliance during a Safer Back to School campaign in Polokwane.
POLOKWANE – MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye led a major compliance operation in Polokwane this morning (January 15), resulting in the impoundment of 24 scholar transport vehicles as part of a Safer Back to School campaign.
The impounded vehicles included 20 minibuses, four seven-seaters, one discontinued vehicle, and a summons issued for illegally conveying people in a light delivery vehicle.
MEC Mathye expressed concern that the operation had forced some learners to walk long distances after non-compliant operators avoided the checkpoints.
“We urge parents to ensure their children are transported in vehicles that meet road traffic laws,” she said.

The department outlined the legal requirements for scholar transport, which include roadworthiness, a valid operating licence, no overloading, clear identification as a learner transport vehicle, full compliance with traffic laws, and a driver with a valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).
“The safety of our learners is a shared responsibility,” Mathye emphasised. “We will continue to enforce compliance to ensure safe transportation for our children.”
