Two bodies found in Limpopo rivers prompt inquests

Police have opened inquests after discovering a missing man in Malamulele and an unidentified man in Makhado, both found in rivers last week.

LIMPOPO – Police are investigating two separate inquest cases following the discovery of bodies in rivers in the Malamulele and Makhado policing areas last week.

In the first incident, a body was discovered in a river at Nghomunghomu Village, Malamulele, on Friday morning (January 23) when a community member pointed out the body trapped among bushes in the river.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the deceased is believed to be a 48-year-old man reported missing on Sunday (January 18). The body was found in an advanced state of decomposition.

In a separate incident, Makhado police opened an inquest after the body of an unknown man was found floating in a river near a local restaurant on Thursday morning (January 22).

“Police responded to a call from the Community Service Centre. The deceased, estimated to be around 58 years old, was partially clothed, wearing a brown striped T-shirt, blue and white underwear, black socks, and no shoes,” says Ledwaba.

EMS certified both deceased persons dead at the respective scenes.

The circumstances surrounding both deaths are unclear. Police investigations are continuing to determine the causes.
