Polokwane brothers bake and build a brand from scratch

Polokwane brothers Donavan and Kutlwano Tshabalala started by selling muffins in school and are now have their sights set on building their own brand.

POLOKWANE – What started as a simple idea in matric has grown into an entrepreneurial journey for brothers Donavan and Kutlwano Tshabalala.

Motivated by the desire to be financially independent, Donavan began selling muffins at school. “I did not want to rely on my mother for pocket money. I wanted to be independent and also contribute financially at home,” he said.

Like many young entrepreneurs, he faced early challenges. Jealousy among classmates led to attempts to sabotage the business, but Donavan persevered and secured formal permission from the school to continue selling.

“With the profit I earned, I was able to pay for my matric dance,” he added.

Later, his brother Kutlwano joined him in the venture, forming a self-improvement brand with a focus on entrepreneurship.

“Our motivation comes from earning money, supporting our household, and seeing our efforts appreciated. We are now working towards raising funds for varsity and future business ventures,” Donavan said.

Brothers Donavan and Kutlwano Tshabalala started a business where they bake and sell the products in the streets of Polokwane.

Beyond baking, the Tshabalala brothers create content on Instagram, Twitch and YouTube, sharing motivational and educational material.

They have also launched an animation channel to expand their digital footprint.

“Our goal is to build an empire that can change the youth mindset and the world,” they concluded.

Anne Mametja

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
