SA documentary ‘The General’ inspired by school principal

'The General,' a South African documentary follows a principal's journey to revive a failing school, a story of quiet heroism and transformation.

LIMPOPO – Local film ‘The General’ is poised to leave a lasting imprint on South African audiences and beyond.

The film is a chronicle of leadership, transformation and the quiet heroism within South Africa’s public education system. Directed by Murena Netshitangani, it centres on Elsie Mphahlele-Sebongwang, the principal of Lufhereng Secondary School, whose arrival in 2020 marked the beginning of a remarkable institutional turnaround.

When Mphahlele-Sebongwang assumed leadership, the school was grappling with challenges common to many public institutions.

Academic performance was alarmingly low, with a matric pass rate of just 51%. Staff morale was fragile, infrastructure was under strain, and confidence among learners and parents was steadily declining.

The documentary traces Mphahlele-Sebongwang’s journey from her early days at the school, marked by resistance, scepticism and fatigue, to the moment her colleagues, recognising her authority and resolve, bestowed upon her the nickname that inspired the film’s title.

Although yet to make its full public debut, ‘The General’ is already generating anticipation within film and education circles.

Netshitangani said the film arrives at a time when South Africa, and the world, are searching for leadership models grounded in integrity rather than spectacle.

“Mrs Elsie Mphahlele-Sebongwang’s story reminds us that transformation does not always come with applause. It often begins with difficult decisions, unwavering discipline and the courage to demand better.”
