Polokwane tutor advises learners on managing first-term stress

A Gr12 tutor offers practical tips for learners struggling with the new academic year, from creating a visual study schedule to ensuring enough rest.

POLOKWANE – As the first term is almost drawing to a close, it’s common for some learners to still be finding their feet. The adjustment period can be particularly challenging, with the pressures of a new grade level adding to their stress.

Gr 12 tutor Pearl Ramotsedisi said that many learners who seek extra help, express frustration over managing their schoolwork. “Academic pressure from increased workloads, tougher assignments, and higher expectations can be overwhelming. Balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities and personal responsibilities is often tricky. Additionally, making new friends, navigating social groups, and dealing with peer pressure can be daunting, leading to self-doubt and anxiety.”

To address these challenges, she recommends establishing a study routine. “A set schedule fosters discipline. For instance, waking up at 05:00 daily to study helps your body adjust, making it easier to maintain this habit over time.”

She also advises learners to create a visual study timetable. “Having a printed schedule serves as a constant reminder of your study commitments and highlights the subjects that require focus,” she says. “Starting with more difficult subjects while your mind is fresh can aid in better information retention.”

Equally important is ensuring enough rest. “Insufficient rest can lead to burnout. While it’s essential to be diligent from the start of the year, it’s equally vital to allow yourself downtime to destress and rejuvenate.”

She also says that struggling is a natural part of adjusting to a new environment. “Be patient with yourself. Settling in takes time. Don’t hesitate to seek help when needed as this is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
