Polokwane jeweller builds trusted brand

Thomas Maswanganyi has built a trusted jewellery business through expert design, repairs and manufacturing for clients across the country.

POLOKWANE – Thomas Maswanganyi’s business is making steady strides in the jewellery industry, specialising in designing, manufacturing, repairing, resizing and polishing.

Maswanganyi is the owner of Thabelang Jewellers based at the Indian Centre in Polokwane, a business he founded more than 15 years ago. Although rooted in Limpopo, his client base extends well beyond the province.

An award-winning jeweller, Maswanganyi counts clients from as far as Durban, many of whom rely on him as their trusted goldsmith.

He said his interest in the trade began in 2005 when he participated in Imfundiso Skills Development, a skill-transfer initiative aimed at empowering historically disadvantaged and unemployed youth.

He explained that jewellery repairs form the backbone of his business.

“With repairs, I can complete the job quickly and get paid,” he said. “Design and manufacturing take longer, sometimes up to a month, before the product is finished and payment is received.”

Outside of work, Maswanganyi is a dedicated karateka and has been practising karate since 1996.

He believes the sport has played a significant role in shaping his discipline, patience and respect, both in business and in life.

“When I am not at the gym, you will find me at work or at church,” he said.
