MH rallies support for flood victims

Mitchell House partnered with Jacaranda FM and Gift of the Givers to deliver flood relief donations to families affected across Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

POLOKWANE – In response to recent flooding that has affected communities across Limpopo and Mpumalanga, the Mitchell House community mobilised to collect and deliver essential relief items for affected families.

The school launched a flood relief drive calling on families, learners, staff and the wider community to donate non-perishable food and other basic supplies. Executive head Renier van Eyssen said the response was overwhelming, with large quantities of donations received in a short space of time.

“All donations were delivered to Jacaranda FM as part of their flood relief initiative, from where ‘Gift of the Givers’ will oversee distribution to affected areas,” Van Eyssen said.

Mitchell House prefects assisted in packing the items into the school minibus, accompanied by Achsah Phoshoko, the school’s director of marketing, as well as Mathapelo Malatji (college teacher assistant), to deliver the donations to the Jacaranda FM studios, right next door, at Mall of the North.

Van Eyssen said that as a Limpopo-based school, Mitchell House felt a responsibility to respond meaningfully to the crisis. “The initiative aimed not only to provide immediate relief, but also to model compassion, unity and active citizenship for our learners,” he said.

He thanked the school community for its generosity and swift response. “It is moments like these that remind us of the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together.”

Van Eyssen added that the relief drive reflects Mitchell House’s commitment to growing people of significance by encouraging values of empathy, responsibility and service. He also expressed appreciation to Jacaranda FM and Gift of the Givers for coordinating the broader relief effort and ensuring donations reach those in need.

Anne Mametja

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
