Tom Naudé maths teacher shines on SA men’s netball stage

Tom Naudé maths teacher Eddie Manyathela represents South Africa in men’s netball and was named best defender nationally.

POLOKWANE – Eddie Manyathela, a mathematics teacher at Tom Naudé Technical High School, has turned his passion for netball into an international career.

He was first introduced to the sport during his first year at the University of Limpopo and quickly became hooked.

“I was 19 and hesitant at first, but I loved the fast pace of the game. I play mostly as a goal defender, which requires physicality, agility and mental focus. You are constantly reading your opponent and trying to disrupt their attack,” he said.

Eddie joined the South African men’s national netball team in 2021 as a reserve, making his debut against Antigua and Barbuda at the Americas Championships in 2022. This year marks his first major international series on home soil.

“Being selected again is a dream come true. Wearing the national colours is an honour and a chance to showcase my skills on the international stage,” he said.

He credits his progress to a combination of experience, skill development, and leadership. “My family, coach and teammates at Rising Stars Netball Club have been instrumental in my growth. Their guidance and support pushed me to be my best.”

Eddie’s proudest moment came when he was named best defender at the Males National Championships. “It was a recognition of the hard work and dedication I’ve put into the sport,” he said.

Looking ahead, he hopes to help South Africa achieve international success and start a boys’ netball team at his school.

“Coaching at Tom Naudé will be a great way to share my experience and grow the sport locally. I can’t wait to start the season and see the team develop,” he added.

Maretha Swanepoel

My name is Maretha Swanepoel and I have worked at the Polokwane Review since 2012. The decision to become a journalist came at 04:00 one Friday morning while watching news of bombings in Afghanistan and I realised I wanted to be there. Some years later, I decided to rather stay in South Africa and join the industry due to my love for writing and curiosity. Even though I can write all beats, I love human interest and community news with some schools added to the mix. Telling someone’s story and using my camera to make memories is a privilege. My interests include animals (especially dogs) and mental health. I like to spend my time with my dogs and a good book. My family is important and takes second place in my heart. God is always first.
