Jabez learners bring comfort to children in oncology ward

Jabez donates over 1 000 tubs of yoghurt to the paediatric oncology ward at Pietersburg Provincial Hospital to support young cancer patients.

POLOKWANE – In a heartwarming gesture, Jabez Christian Academy donated 1 452 tubs of yoghurt to the Paediatric Oncology Ward (TLC) at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital on Friday, bringing smiles to young patients recovering from cancer treatment.

The donation formed part of the school’s Cancer Month initiative. Representatives from Cansa TLC, Bobby Were (coordinator) and Patric Vence (volunteer), received the donation on behalf of the ward. Were said the yoghurts were desperately needed and would go a long way in supporting patients’ recovery.

“The yoghurt helps restore good bacteria in the gut, which is essential after chemotherapy, as the treatment tends to wipe out everything in the system. It is also easy for the children to eat, making it very beneficial. We thank Jabez Christian Academy for this meaningful donation,” said Were.

Matric learners assist to load the donation onto the vehicle.

The event included praise and worship, with learners and staff praying for healing and relief from pain for the young patients. Gr 12 learner Shayrne Ishmail, who leads the school’s spiritual growth programme, read scriptures related to healing before the group joined hands in prayer for the children in the TLC ward.

Jabez Christian Academy principal, Dr Elana Erasmus, said the visit to the TLC ward is an annual initiative. She thanked parents for assisting learners in collecting the yoghurts and praised the learners for their generosity.

“Our learners willingly gave up their own yoghurt, showing responsibility and compassion within their communities,” said Erasmus.

Matric learners also assisted by helping to load the donation into the vehicle.

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
