DA, ANC strengthen Limpopo structures ahead of polls

Leadership changes are underway in Limpopo as major parties gear up for the next local government elections.

POLOKWANE – Political activity is intensifying across all levels as parties strengthen leadership structures in preparation for the upcoming local government elections, the date which is yet to be determined.

For the first time, the DA in Limpopo has elected certain regional structures, with a new Constituency Executive Committee (CEC) chosen on January 31 in Capricorn. The committee is led by Androe Botha as chairperson.

 The newly elected leadership:

Deputy Chairperson: Johanna Mohogo

Secretary: Bianca Mocke

Treasurer: Helga Hlongoane

Disciplinary head: Motlatjo Thetjeng

The committee will oversee regional administration and operations and play a key role in selecting candidates to contest ward councillor positions, including in areas around the city.

The party’s provincial congress, where Limpopo leadership will be elected, is scheduled for May.

This will follow the national congress, where current leader John Steenhuisen has announced he will not seek another term.

Meanwhile, preparations are also underway within the ANC in Limpopo to elect new provincial leadership earlier than anticipated, as part of efforts to prepare for the municipal elections.

ANC local leaders Mamedupi Teffo and Nomonder Sivhabu lead party activities ahead of the local government elections set indefinitely between November and January.

The party that secures a majority in a municipal council holds the power to nominate the mayor and influence key political appointments, including the chief whip and speaker.

According to regional members, two factional groups that had emerged during recent lobbying meetings were dissolved after provincial secretary Reuben Madadzhe indicated that such slates were inconsistent with party policies.

The two groups had initially drawn up competing slates for similar positions, with the chairperson position expected to be hotly contested.

Members, however, reportedly agreed on a unified leadership approach.

Dr Phophi Ramathuba is supported for chairperson, John Mpe for deputy chairperson, the Mopani mayor for deputy secretary, and Lepelle-Nkumpi mayor Eddie Maila for treasurer.
