Man (49) stabbed to death at Tshiozwi tavern

A 49-year-old man was fatally stabbed during a fight at a Tshiozwi liquor outlet, raising concerns over violent crime in the Tshilwavhusiku policing area.

LIMPOPO – A 49-year-old man was stabbed to death at a local liquor outlet in Tshiozwi village on Saturday evening, in an incident that has heightened concerns over violent crime in the Tshilwavhusiku policing area.

Police spokesperson Capt Vuledzani Dathi said the incident occurred at around 22:00 when an argument broke out between the deceased, Stephens Ramaligela, and a 25-year-old suspect. The confrontation escalated into a fight inside the tavern.

Ramaligela was stabbed in the chest and back with a sharp object and died at the scene. “When police arrived, the victim was lying on the ground. We were alerted by community members who witnessed the incident,” said Dathi.

The suspect was arrested the following day and appeared in court on March 3. At the time of going to press, the outcome of the court appearance was not yet known.

The murder has added to growing concerns about violent incidents at liquor outlets in the area. Community members and police say such killings are becoming increasingly common.

The deceased’s sister, Dorcus Ramaligela, said the family is devastated by the loss. “We are heartbroken by this tragedy. We hope the investigation will reveal exactly what happened,” she said.

Traditional leader Vhamusanda Vho Vhathundimapfura Makhado Sinthumule also expressed shock at the incident.

“As a traditional leader and a member of the community, we are still in shock. Young people are supposed to be focusing on their studies and writing exams. It is saddening to see lives lost at liquor outlets. Losing young people is like losing the future of the country,” he said.

He urged young people to avoid frequenting liquor outlets and instead prioritise their education and personal development.
