POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Fencing Association (LFA) fielded a 33-member squad at the recent Gauteng Open, making a strong provincial statement at one of the country’s key fencing events.

The competition featured South Africa’s top fencers in the u/17, u/20 and senior categories, testing athletes against the best in the country.

Across the board, the province’s fencers gained valuable experience, improved their skills and strengthened their positions in the national rankings.

Several bouts were decided by narrow margins, with multiple Limpopo fencers reaching the quarter-final stages.

Two athletes returned home with medals. Gloria Bopape secured bronze in the u/20 women’s épée, while Renuka Ramroop, a medallist and chairperson of the Limpopo Fencing Association, claimed bronze in the veteran women’s épée.

Ramroop told Polokwane Observer that Bopape, currently Limpopo’s top-ranked fencer in both the u/20 and senior categories, had to fight hard for every point on the piste.

“She was eventually defeated in the semi-final by the gold medallist, a visiting fencer from Switzerland.

“Despite this, her steady climb in the national u/20 women’s épée rankings continues to be celebrated within the Limpopo fencing community,” said Ramroop.

Competing in the senior women’s épée proved even more challenging, with experienced fencers fiercely contesting ranking positions.

Bopape nevertheless performed admirably, reaching the quarter-finals and further establishing herself as a rising force at senior level.

Ramroop also delivered a strong performance.

In a tightly contested bout, she mounted an impressive comeback from a four-point deficit to level the score, ultimately missing silver by a single point.

She described the result as a valuable learning experience, noting that one-minute priority, or sudden-death bouts, are mentally demanding and can swing either way.

The Limpopo Fencing Association expressed pride in its athletes and their contribution to the growth of the sport in the province.
