Limpopo police warn students about extortion scam
Limpopo Police warn students after an extortion scam at the University of Venda involving threats and fake spiritual claims.
LIMPOPO – The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, has issued a warning to the public, particularly students, following an extortion incident at the University of Venda.
On Sunday, March 15, a 20-year-old student in Thohoyandou reportedly received a phone call from a woman claiming to be a “woman of God” capable of removing evil spirits.
The suspect allegedly manipulated the victim during a video call, instructing her to perform inappropriate acts under the guise of a spiritual cleansing ritual.
Screenshots were allegedly taken without her consent, and the suspect then demanded money, threatening to publish the images if the victim did not comply.
Police condemn extortion
Hadebe condemned the act, describing it as a serious form of extortion and exploitation.
She warned students and young people to be cautious when receiving calls from unknown individuals, particularly those making spiritual or supernatural claims.
“Criminals are increasingly using manipulation and intimidation to exploit victims.
“If you receive threats or suspicious requests, report the matter immediately and do not send money or vouchers to unknown individuals,” added Hadebe.
Safety advice for the public
“Members of the public are advised never to engage in explicit acts during online interactions with unknown persons.
“If you receive threats or suspicious requests, report the matter immediately to the nearest police station,” she added.
Community members are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspected extortion attempts to prevent further exploitation.
