Fatal N1 crash claims five lives in Limpopo
A crash on the N1 near Boekenhout in Limpopo claimed five lives and left two others seriously injured, authorities confirmed.
POLOKWANE – Five people were killed and two others seriously injured in a crash on the N1-25 near Boekenhout in the Waterberg District on Wednesday, April 1.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the incident occurred at about 07:45 and involved three vehicles.
Three vehicles involved
The department said a Renault light motor vehicle was allegedly making a U-turn on the freeway when it collided head-on with a Ford light delivery vehicle and a Toyota light delivery vehicle.
Two male drivers and three occupants from one of the vehicles died at the scene.
Two passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to FH Odendaal Hospital for treatment.
Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed shock at the incident and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away,” she said.
Cause under investigation
The department said reckless driving is suspected to have contributed to the crash, although the exact cause is still under investigation.
Mathye also wished those injured a speedy recovery and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
