Limpopo teen finds strength in karate

LIMPOPO – The 19-year-old Zwothe Marandela has found strength and empowerment through the discipline of karate.

A passion ignited

Marandela, an orange belt grading student at Takalani Karate Centre, says his passion for the sport was inspired by his late sensei, Takalani Target Mushavhanamadi.

His journey in karate has become one of self-discovery, growth and achievement.

Currently training under Senpai Azwihangwisi Yeye Nematshetshete, Marandela’s hard work has earned him a place in the Takalani Karate Centre dojo team that will compete at the Limpopo Championships on May 2 at The Ranch Resort outside Polokwane.

The Itsani village resident, outside Thohoyandou in the Vhembe district, said karate has taught him discipline, respect and self-control.

Honouring his late sensei

“I learned a lot from my sensei, and whatever he taught me I will never forget. He played a crucial role in my life. Had it not been for him, I would never be where I am today, in karate and in life,” he said.

Marandela added that he fights using the empi kata, which was a favourite of his late mentor.

“Fighting with empi kata is another way of honouring him. May his soul continue to rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Discipline, dedication, and future goals

Looking ahead, Marandela has set ambitious goals for his karate career.

He hopes to earn a black belt, become a top male karate fighter and inspire other young men to take up the sport.

 “Karate has taught me valuable lessons that extend beyond the dojo. I have learnt the importance of discipline, respect, loyalty and dedication.

“My passion for karate motivates me to persevere, even in challenging times,” he said.

Inspiring the next generation

He also encouraged young people in Vhembe to join karate and stay away from drugs.

“I always wanted to be like my sensei. He had a fourth dan black belt, which I hope to achieve one day. I am determined to become the best karateka like him,” he said.
