Family seeks help for Marcell Roos (27) after rare diagnosis
Marcell Roos (27) is facing a serious medical diagnosis and his family has launched an appeal for financial assistance.
POLOKWANE – In January, the 27-year-old Marcell Roos’ life took an unexpected turn when he began experiencing persistent symptoms that left more questions than answers.
Months of uncertainty before diagnosis
His wife, Nikitha, said that for months Marcell received treatment to manage the symptoms, but the underlying cause remained unclear.
Despite the uncertainty, the family believed something more serious was wrong.
CT scan reveals large chest mass
Clarity came on April 7 when a CT scan revealed a large anterior mediastinal mass measuring about 7cm x 14cm.
The growth is causing Superior Vena Cava (SVC) Syndrome by compressing major veins.
Nikitha explained that the mass is encasing the aorta and its branches and extends into the middle of the chest, affecting the pulmonary arteries.
Family relieved to finally have answers
The family has expressed relief at finally having a diagnosis.
“We thank God for allowing a speedy identification of the problem. We now know what we are fighting and can move toward the treatment Marcell needs,” she said.
Doctors work to confirm diagnosis
Doctors are currently working to determine whether the mass is lymphoma or a thymic lesion.
A biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis, after which a targeted treatment plan can be implemented.
Urgent financial pressure on family
The next phase, however, comes with significant financial pressure.
The family says months of treating symptoms have already placed a strain on their resources, and urgent money is now needed for specialised care.
Ongoing treatment and specialist costs
Costs are expected to include radiology, oncology and cardiothoracic consultations, as well as treatment once a diagnosis is confirmed.
Family launches fundraising appeal
The family has launched an online fundraising campaign through BackaBuddy and is appealing to the public, businesses and the community for assistance.
“We are humbled by the support we have received so far and ask for continued prayers and donations as Marcell begins his journey to recovery. Every contribution brings us closer to getting him the life-saving treatment he needs,” Nikitha said.
Donations of any amount are welcomed as the family prepares for the medical procedures ahead.
