Severe thunderstorms expected in parts of Limpopo

SAWS issues a yellow level 2 severe thunderstorm warning for Limpopo's Waterberg, Capricorn and Sekhukhune districts with possible flooding.

LIMPOPO – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to affect parts of Limpopo today.

According to SAWS, the thunderstorms could bring heavy downpours, strong damaging winds and localised flooding.

Areas expected to be most affected include parts of the Waterberg, Capricorn and Sekhukhune districts, while neighbouring areas in Gauteng and Mpumalanga are also under warning.

SAWS warned that the storms may result in damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, property, vehicles, livestock and livelihoods.

“Localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges” is also expected, the weather service said.

The warning further noted that disruptions to municipal and essential services, including electricity, communication, health and education services, could occur in affected areas.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution as wet conditions and poor visibility may increase the risk of minor vehicle accidents.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are advised to remain alert and avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges.
