Northern Academy teacher still inspiring learners after decades

Veteran teacher Pieter Kamffer continues inspiring learners through education, positivity and perseverance after decades in the classroom.

POLOKWANE – Pieter Kamffer has spent decades encouraging and guiding young people through education. Having started his teaching career in 1984, he says he still enjoys teaching as much today as when he first entered the classroom.

Kamffer said he grew up in a happy and safe home where his parents taught him the values of hard work, responsibility and hope. He said those lessons helped shape him into the person and teacher he is today.

Journey at Northern Academy

In 2001, Kamffer joined Northern Academy as part of the Gr 12 mathematics team and later became responsible for teaching the subject to matric learners.

In 2018, he moved to teaching Gr 8-9 learners, something he says he enjoys since it allows him to shape young minds from an early age.

He said one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is motivating learners and encouraging them to stay positive.

“Young people today face many challenges and obstacles, but there is always hope,” he said.

Inspired by learner success

Over the years, many of Kamffer’s former learners have gone on to become doctors, pilots and lecturers. Seeing his learners succeed reminds him why he loves teaching, he said.

Finding balance through cycling

Outside the classroom, Kamffer enjoys cycling and he has completed 19 Cape Town Cycle Tour races. He hopes to complete his 21st race in the near future.

He said cycling has taught him patience and perseverance, adding that it helped him learn never to give up.

Leaving a lasting legacy

Although he is nearing the end of his teaching career, Kamffer still hopes to make a positive difference in the lives of learners. He also hopes the lessons and values he shared with students will continue to be passed on to future generations.

His message to young people is simple: enjoy life, stay positive, work hard and never lose hope, because better days can still come.
