Community leader among 5 killed in N1 crash

Vhembe community leader Sarah Thenga was among five people killed in a fatal collision involving a tanker and Hyundai minibus on the N1.

LIMPOPO – The Thenga, Mudau and Tshisundzungwane families in Thengwe and Tshitanzhe villages, just outside Mutale, are in mourning following the tragic death of Mudzinginyo Community Service chairperson, Muvhulawa Sarah Thenga.

Thenga died in a fatal incident next to the Nyl River involving a tanker and a Hyundai minibus, in which five occupants of the Hyundai perished.

Vhembe loses a respected figure

She was a well-known businesswoman and chairperson of a non-government organisation focused on promoting the welfare of elderly people in and around Vhembe, and as far as Gauteng.

The organisation also encouraged elderly people to maintain dignity and well-being through activities such as singing, dancing and prayer.

Thenga, who was visually impaired, previously shared that the organisation was established in December 2024 after she received a vision during a prayer session. She said she later became aware of challenges faced by elderly people, including financial and emotional abuse, abandonment by family members, and vulnerability to illness and stress-related conditions such as strokes.

Family prepares for final farewell

Her younger sister, Ennie Mudau, confirmed her death and said the family was devastated by the loss.

“We are still shocked about the fatal crash that claimed five lives, and my elder brother was among those who died. We are preparing for her burial, which is scheduled for Saturday in Mufulwi village,” said Mudau.

Five lives lost in devastating crash

According to the Department of Transport and Community Safety, the N1 between Mookgopong and the Nylplaza Toll Gate was temporarily closed following the crash but has since been reopened.

Department spokesperson Mashudu Mabatha confirmed the collision involving a tanker and a sedan.

Five people in the minibus died on impact, while four other occupants were rushed to hospital with serious injuries, he confirmed. The tanker driver sustained minor injuries.

Investigation into crash continues

The department extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Authorities have appealed to motorists to exercise caution as congestion is expected around the reopened stretch of road, particularly near tollgates. Road users are urged to reduce speed, obey traffic officials and adhere to road signage.

The police are continuing investigations and working to identify the deceased and notify their next of kin. Officials have once again urged road users to prioritise safety, warning that every life lost on South Africa’s roads is one too many.
