R6.2m Westenburg waste facility officially launched
Job creation and local supplier involvement formed part of the broader impact of the new infrastructure project.
POLOKWANE – Westenburg has officially entered a new phase of improved waste management following the opening of its waste transfer station along Grand Canyon Street this morning (June 5).
The facility was officially commissioned by MMC for Community Safety, Clr Joosuf Pemma, on behalf of Polokwane Executive Mayor Makoro John Mpe, together with other members of the Mayoral Committee.

R6.2m investment in infrastructure
The Westenburg Waste Transfer Station was implemented by Nemorango Consulting Engineers in partnership with TLM Engineering Services and has been completed at an estimated cost of approximately R6.2m.

Job creation and local economic impact
According to the municipality, the project created 19 employment opportunities during the construction phase, providing short-term income support to local residents.
Several local businesses were also involved throughout the project, ensuring that economic benefits were shared within the community beyond the construction site.
Focus on environmental and community benefits
Officials say the facility is expected to improve waste handling efficiency in the area and contribute to a cleaner local environment.
The municipality added that the project also reflects a broader commitment to combining infrastructure development with local economic participation.
