LIMPOPO – Raised in the rural village of Duthuni outside Thohoyandou, advocate Mpho Ephraim Nelushi set out to make a difference in the world.

Like many children from humble beginnings, Nelushi began his primary education at Tshisahulu Primary School, in 1993. He later attended Ratshiedana Senior Primary School in Duthuni before completing matric at Ligege Secondary School.

Nelushi holds both a Bachelor of Science degree and an LLB from the University of Venda.

From policing to the legal profession

He started his career in the police service, serving at the Makhado local criminal record centre. Through dedication and hard work, he rose through the ranks and was promoted to warrant officer in 2013.

In December 2024, Nelushi resigned from the police service to pursue a legal career through the Limpopo Society of Advocates. He was subsequently admitted as a legal practitioner of the High Court of South Africa and enrolled as an advocate.

According to Nelushi, integrity remains one of the most valuable qualities a legal practitioner can possess.

“A lawyer’s reputation is built on honesty, professionalism and ethical conduct,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of resilience, saying the journey to becoming a lawyer is often demanding and filled with challenges, setbacks and moments of self-doubt.

A passion for justice

Reflecting on his career, Nelushi said his motivation to study law came from witnessing injustice within communities and wanting to be part of the solution.

“I was inspired by the opportunity to give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves, and to contribute meaningfully to the administration of justice.”

Lessons for aspiring lawyers

He believes success in the legal profession requires discipline, dedication and continuous personal growth. He also credited the support of family as a key ingredient for success, saying a strong support system provides stability, encouragement and peace of mind.

Today, he encourages aspiring lawyers to take their studies seriously, remain humble and commit themselves to continuous learning, reminding them that the legal profession is ultimately about serving justice, protecting rights and helping others.
